Bookmarks Awards 2016

Design Indaba online publication wins Bookmark Award

We’re really proud to announce that our Design Indaba online publication has won a Silver Bookmark Award for niche publications in the category “Specialist Publisher Sites”. After repositioning the Design Indaba website as a fully fledged online publication that breathes life to the organisation’s philosophy of “A Better World Through Creativity”, this was our first time entering the annual digital awards programme run by IAB South Africa. The category saw Design Indaba winning silver alongside online retail platform (also taking away a Silver Bookmark). has taken the place of the award-winning Design Indaba Magazine but enhanced by its multimedia digital format that includes original video coverage of African design and the internationally renowned talks from the Design Indaba Conference. Going digital has also meant going global; the online platform sees over one million annual visitors and is popular all around the world, with particularly large followings in the US, Europe, the UK and of course at home in South Africa, and well represented in Kenya, India, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Australia.

This win for Design Indaba is in itself a measure of the successful reinvention of its online platform, from what once was a website simply servicing the annual conference and expo (now the Design Indaba Festival), to a self-standing online platform that showcases the best of the design industries with a particular focus on African design that changes lives for real people.
